LOGO & Illustration for golden hour orchestra & heptet
Golden Hour Orchestra is an amazing and beloved swing era band, based in Austin, playing music from the 1920s to the 1950s. Swing dancers (which I am one) particularly love Golden Hour for their great swingin’ beat and expertise in early jazz music. As a dancer and jazz fan, I was so excited to design the logo and illustrate the “mascots” for the Heptet and Orchestra. Lauryn Gould, the bandleader, had a vision of 1950’s font and illustration styles seen on classic jazz album covers (particularly David Stone Martin era). I created a custom typeface that reflected that bold 1950s style with a playful background shape and muted gold with classic black and cream. The illustrations are of Austin’s most renowned bird, the grackle! Hand drawn with angular shapes and a bit of jazzy humor, these grackles are popular with the swing dancers in Austin and you can see them regularly wearing Golden Hour tshirts while they are out dancing!
