ALBUM DESIGN FOR MARK DEUTROM’S THE BLUE BIRD
Mark Deutrom’s 2019 album, The Blue Bird, drifts through a dreamlike mix of heavy rock, psychedelia, and atmospheric interludes. The title and imagery of The Blue Bird connect to a long-standing cultural symbol of sentimentality and longing. That thread runs back to Maurice Maeterlinck’s 1908 play The Blue Bird (and its later film adaptations), where the bird represents happiness, beauty, and something deeply sought after but often elusive. Since Mark is my husband, I was intimately familiar with the themes explored in his work. The ornate, vintage design reinforces his literary inspiration and the moody blue cover, swirling patterns, gold leaf touches, and isolated landscapes touch on the rich and shifting introspective emotions expressed in the music.
